The Michigan Martial Arts Project is documenting the diverse landscape of martial arts in Michigan.

From the tip of Copper Harbor in the Upper Peninsula to the southern border of Lambertville on the Michigan-Ohio line, the martial arts are alive and kicking. The Michigan Martial Arts Project strives to capture all of the personalities, events, tournaments, shows, demonstrations, fights, displays, and all the other tactics the fighting arts practitioners use to show and share their arts with others.

The history of teaching and practicing the martial arts in Michigan is being explored by interviewing those individuals that have helped to shape the fighting arts and self-defense scene in the Wolverine State from the start. Karate, tae kwon do, aikido, kung fu, tang soo do, tai chi, mixed martial arts, grappling, kali, judo, kendo, and other styles – originally imported from China, India, Japan, Okinawa, Korea, The Philippines, and other places – have all found strong footholds in schools and clubs throughout Michigan, and The Michigan Martial Arts Project is highlighting and sharing these wonderful stories with insiders and veterans of the arts as well as newcomers, those outside of the arts and outside of Michigan.
